Funding to support and strengthen the MFI sector
Fundación José María Covelo (Fundación Covelo) provides financial services, technical assistance and technological solutions to consolidate and develop microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Honduras. Fundación Covelo supports MFIs in Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua and three cooperatives.
Fundación Covelo has been operating for more than 20 years and is considered to be one of the most experienced and well-known microfinance institutions in the country. In addition to financial products (loans and credit lines) it also provides technical support to mitigate risks, which are identified during client monitoring visits.
Fundación Covelo has a strong social profile and actively promotes the use of renewable energy. It has, for instance, developed a new fund which enables clients to finance the purchase of solar panels by people who have limited access to the public grid.
In recent years, Fundación Covelo has invested in improving (rural) outreach, inclusion and gender balance by financing a number of women’s organizations.
Fundación José María Covelo has been an Oikocredit partner since 2012.
